acrylic, gold leaf on jute coffee bag, 2025
100 × 70cm | 39.5 × 27.5in
The California Tears series was created during a winter 2025 trip to California. I arrived at the end of a devastating fire season which destroyed parts of Los Angeles, extremely high prices, no eggs available, real life cybertrucks (I’d only seen them in memes before), and the start of a presidency and administration I do not support. I started the year limiting my color palette to only four colors to explore the depths of what would be revealed. I continue to work with only black, white, tan, and gold which are the basis of this series. In addition to the 4 colors, I fell in love with using discarded coffee bean bags as canvas - I found comfort in their texture, color, and rustic quality. The California Tears series reflects my feelings of confusion and despair with the state of the world - with a slight bit of hope thrown in.
